ive just come home from work and sadly found my female dead in bottom of the tank.
i think i disturbed her digging a few days ago, so this could of been my fault as she could of been egg bound. could this be the cause of death? think im goin to have alook to see if she laid any eggs.

I wouldn't have thought she would become egg bound over a couple of days Chris. Did she look skinnier?
From painful personal experience of deaths with chameleons (I'm not THAT prolific at killing them!) the bellies get VERY sunken when they die, and they look like starvation victims. Must be something to do with the muscles relaxing. I would have thought it she retained the eggs you shouldn't see this (sorry to be so macabre)
Taz has harvested eggs from a pregnant Brev that he had and died on him before it laid. P.M him and see if he can give you any advice if this is a route you wish to go down (wouldn't blame you if you didn't, I'd imagine its quite a grim job)
Sorry to hear about you loss
Austin
Well, hopefully you will have babies in about 3 months (I presume they are Brevs?)
Small consolation, but at least its something.
I don't think its uncommon from what I've read for females to die after laying. It must take a lot out of them. Again, from what I've read, far more common for R Nichiensis to pass away after laying, but they do lay bigger clutches. (possibly something to do with the extra effort or maybe the extra calcium used)
Best of luck anyhow

indeedy, harvesting was a difficult decision to make, but as mentioned the bellies tend to suck in so it was very easy to feel that there were eggs inside the female of mine. it wasnt noticeable to look at though that she was gravid. Although it was a bit macabre I figured that if the eggs were good, better to have the possiblity of 3 new lives. it was ashame though that the eggs got most of the way through incubation but fell at the last hurdle.![]()

A lot of respect to you Taz for having the balls to do it. I think I might have to grow a pair before I did, but you never know how you'd react until you're forced into that situation.
it was very surreal at the time i'll admit, the female in question was my Favourite pygmy too! so once she began to deteriorate I knew it wouldnt be long before she passed away and I thought that she was gravid as she was huge for ages. and in hindsight she must have been egg bound as the eggs were alot larger than normal. in the end i just thought, ok she has gone but there could be 3-4 more little versions of her that might make it and thats what made me do the deed in the end. Id have always been wondering what if........... still cant believe they nearly made it too. sad times. thats why im so excited about the live bearers no sitting watching and hoping for eggs to hatch. just watching fat momma getting bigger by the minute until she explodes with fully formed and ready to eat babies!

So Taz did the eggs you harvested die? I did the same yesterday because my female was unfortunately egg bound and died last night and I'm incubating the eggs now in soil but I've ordered vermiculite that should be here by the end of the week. The eggs look white and fine atm but I'm hoping that my poor female didn't die without leaving little versions of herself behind!
