    Default Help!!!

I brought 3 Pygmy Chameleons last Wednesday, and one of the females has been digging about for the last couple of days.......She has just laid 4 eggs so far!!! - the other female has been beside her while she laid the eggs and has been keeping watch over her - is this normal??

The female that has just laid the eggs did not look gravid.....if anything, the other one looks gravid. They have all been eating well (taking 3/4 crickets each).

Just seems a bit strange having the other female watching over her like some sort of midwife!!!

Did not see the mating, but I don't know how long it takes from mating to egg laying - the male doesn't seemed that bothered in the girls and goes his own way (perhaps he's wasn't the breeding male)

Any help/advice would be much appreciated - really wasn't expecting this after a few days of owning these!!!

Hola! and welcome to the forum!
well I ahve to say that you really didnt expect all this after only a few days!
When were the eggs laid exactly?
as for the other one keeping watch, I wouldnt worry about it too much, maybe she is just nosy! if you think she may be gravid then there could potentially be a problem. Pygmy tend to dig around to find the best spot to lay so if she was digging for a few days and only recently fond this spot to lay in, then if the other pygmy is gravid, then there is the possibility that she will search and find that spot to be the best too. some people have found that other pygmy have dug up incubating eggs so that they can lay theres in that particular spot.

If I were you, I would get yourself a small container - tupperware or a cricket tub, fil it half way with some stuff called Vermiculite or Perlite (which you can get from wilkinsons in the gardening section really cheap), dampen it and then squeeze as much water out of it as you can. you want to be able to squeeze it to the point were very little liquid comes out it. then pop it in the container.
put 4 little depressions into the vermiculite then take each egg - and be really careful with this part as you need to keep the egg in the same position that you take it out of the tank and lay it again in exactly the same way. this is because after the eggs are laid, the foetus lays at a certain place inside the egg and needs to be able to access the little air pocket that will sit at the highest point in the egg. if the position of the eggs is changed there is risk that the little fellas will drown inside.

Once you have carefully placed the eggs in the depressions, gently cover the eggs so that 2/3 are covered in the vermiculite.

here are mine that i have cooking at the min.

Eggs usually hatch between 60-90 days after they are laid depending on the temps they are kept at. anywhere from 63-73f is ideal so im told.
mine are kept in my wardrobe on the top shelf.

    hope this helps.

    ; )

The Eggs were laid Sunday morning. The other female lost interest by the afternoon and went here own way, but the one that laid the eggs sat watch on them all day. I don't know if the other one is gravid - she has not been digging at all, but she is eating very well - more than the other two, so perhaps she is just fat from being such a pig!!!
Is it possible for females to lay eggs that aren't fertilised???, or do they only lay once they have mated??? I haven't touched the eggs yet, as I am still a novice at this and don't really want to disturb them, but if you recommend that I move them, then I can try. I was hoping I could leave them in the viv and let them hatch naturally - I am keeping a close eye on the temp and humidity anyway, being my first lot, and as I don't know if they have been fertilised, I was going to leave it for 60 days and see what happens.

Its entirely up to you! the only reason I took them out is because:
    1) I harvested 3 from a dead cham - only one left now though!
    2) My female was getting pestered all the time by my male so when I seperated her into a different container she popped 3 out straight away
    3) i uncovered 3 more when I took a plant out to repot

I didnt really want to leave my eggs in the main enclosure as I was concerned over watering etc and the eggs taking in too much water. but as i said, the choice really is yours! I have one of my females back in a smaller container for a few days as she seems fit to burst again plus my male is not giving her any peace! time will tell if she lays again!

good luck with your eggs! let us all know how you get on!

forgot to add, im sure they only lay once they have mated, not heard of pygmy laying infertile clutches just for the sake of it.

Heres an update on my unexpected eggs...........Have just gone to the exo to feed my little ones, and have found a baby cham amongst the fern!!!
I have no idea how long it has been there, it still has soil on it so I am assuming not very long. Can't see any others yet, but they may not have hatched yet. I have checked the soil where the original eggs were laid, but it doesn't look like the soil has been disturbed, so it could be a different clutch from my other female??
Anyway, panicked a bit (1st unexpected one and all that!!), have place it in a spare exo, but I don't have any food small enough to feed it although I managed to find a couple of really small size 2 crickets that are slightly bigger than pin heads, hopefully these will be OK.
What I now relly need to know is how to care for it......do I need any type of heating or lighting for it in the first stages of it's life??? really paranoid now it's finally hatched, I have no idea how to care for it.

Any advice would be welcome x

dont worry about heating or lighting at the minute, and as the little fella is only just hatched he will be good for a few days living from the yolk from his little egg sac. I have managed to raise a little one for the past 3/4weeks and he is doing great and he is deffo a he! gutted as all my parent chams died so he is the only one I have at the minute although I have 3 eggs read to pop!

your little one should be good for 2/3 days if it doesnt like the little crickets you have there, dont think there is anything wrong with him. they just tend to live off of their yolk sac for the first few days. once thats all gone it will be a little munchin machine! mine is eating probably 10 micro crickets a day. good luck, send some pics!

I left the eggs in the adult exo not really expecting them to hatch as I only had them a few days before they laid eggs, so not really prepared for breeding them. Now one has hatched, I have no idea if he was one of the clutch I saw being laid or another clutch laid. I have no idea where he hatched from!!!! I took him out, but I don't know where his egg sac is?? Will have to keep a close eye on him to make sure he eats over the next few days.
I have placed a desk lamp over him, just to give a bit of light/heat - is this OK??

I didn't have any soil, so I have used damp moss for the time being - any suggestions??

Should I set it up the smae as my adult one? thing is, I am hoping to put him/her in with the adults when its big enough

Hi....well done chameleons....and you lol! I have kept baby chameleons in the plastic faunarium terrariums....a small/medium one. Then put some kitchen roll on the bottom...then a few twigs, some leaves and a plastic plant (the only time I use plastic plants). By doing this the baby can see and find food easily and you can monitor what is being eaten. The house is also easy to clean out and put back together again. A lamp with a low watt datlight bulb would be good.....but keep an eye on the temperatures in such a small terrarium! Good luck raising your baby! Cheers

Thanks for that - I have him in a med faunarium and will add kitchen roll to make it easier for him. He's still going strong and has been stalking micro crickets today, but as his tongue is so small, he keeps missing them!! - I'm sure he will learn.

Average temperature is around 75 is that ok??

No other babies have appeared today, but I will keep an eye out over the next couple of days just in case.

How long do I need to keep him/her seperated from the others?? or would it be better to place him/her in a larger exo terra on his/her own once he/she has grown a bit??

Here are a couple of photo's of the little one
