R. brevicaudatus can be tricky to sex until it has reached sexual maturity at around 2-3 months, by which time the male will have fully developed his lateral patterning. There are several features that can be used to distinguish males from females, however it is worth noting that sometimes males can appear feminine, and females masculine.
