R. brevicaudatus can be tricky to sex until it has reached sexual maturity at around 2-3 months, by which time the male will have fully developed his lateral patterning. There are several features that can be used to distinguish males from females, however it is worth noting that sometimes males can appear feminine, and females masculine.

Male Dorsal crest is more defined, and tends to extend to the length of the tail. Generally have longer tails than females. Exhibit strong pattern and colouration when displaying. Have striped eye turrets that become more apparent when displaying.		Female Typically have a more rotund build than the male which is more often than not slender in comparison. Dorsal crest is usually less well-defined and terminates in advance of the tail. Have shorter tails than males. Have more subdued colouration and patterns than males.
